Artificial Intelligence Policy
The Neuse River Writers wish to state clearly and emphatically our official policies with regard to the use of AI and other language generative programs and technologies.

These policies apply to any contest, program or presentation, in any medium, format or genre, whether it is presented by the Neuse River Writers in our own monthly meetings, on our website, or by one of our representatives authorized to speak or present workshops on behalf of the Neuse River Writers in any of these formats. This includes anything being presented by video, PowerPoint or any other means of communication.

Unless otherwise specified, in writing, by the President of the Neuse River Writers for a specific reason or specific program, it is our policy that we DO NOT use, accept or recognize any materials created using a generative AI program or any other similar technologies or text generative programs.

This includes, but is not limited to, the use of AI to generate the work itself, the outline, the characters, the plot arcs, dialogue, descriptions, or any other core element of the work’s creation.

This does not ban the use of technologies meant to assist a writer in the refinement of human created materials, such as correcting spelling or grammar, insuring plausibility of the work or in the process of research for their work or stories.

If any previously recognized or awarded work is found or disclosed to have been created using generative AI or any other type of algorithm or writing assistance, that recognition and/or award will be rescinded.

It is our mission at Neuse River Writers to create, nurture and protect an environment for those who are interested in learning the craft of writing and who care deeply about writing, film making and other creative endeavors.

We view writing as a sacred trust between writers and readers. We believe writing to be one of the greatest freedoms and personal expressions known in our world and seek to protect it and those who work to create it.

While it is possible for AI and other programs like it to mimic content and structure, it cannot understand or create feeling, nuance or emotion and therefore, it cannot be the voice that connects people in conversations about human experience. The best it can do is steal, plagiarize and interpret what has already been done by humans, but it does not have the ability to actually participate in the conversation.

Furthermore, AI often offers inaccurate, factually incorrect and even dangerous answers to questions it is asked. It has no ability to consider things like context or double meanings or even something as simple as irony or humor when it generates an answer. This can create intense and expensive issues for writers with their work.

Generative AI does not assist writers, it replaces them. It is a well-documented fact that many AI programs rely completely on the intake of large amounts of stolen works without ever compensating the human authors. The corporations developing these technologies state openly they cannot function without stealing the work of real writers. This is theft, plain and simple. On that basis alone, it has no place in Neuse River Writers activities and will not be used or allowed.
We welcome any questions you may have about our policies pertaining to the use of AI in your writing, presentations or video content.

Please address your questions to: Char Vinar, President, Neuse River Writers at whatever our new official email address will be.
